I attended the public schools in Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science, a Masters of Teaching in Early Childhood Education, and a Educational Specialist Degree in Administration all from South Carolina State University. I am currently working on my Doctorate in Educational Administration.

I have been teaching for 12 years. I first entered the educational field in 2001, when I taught Head Start for four years. Upon receiving my Masters, I taught first grade in Sumter District 2 for two years. I then decided to return home and have been in OCSD5 ever since. I taught third grade my first year here and then moved to first where I was needed the most, and have been here ever since.

My name is Ms. Nieka Huggins. I am from Orangeburg, SC. I am the proud mother of two of God's most precious blessings, Savon a 16 year old and London a 2 year old. I have one sister and two brothers. I was the 2006-07 Distinguished Reading Teacher of the Year in Sumter District 2. I am an active member of the distinguished sorority of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated.

I believe that each child is a unique and precious individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As and educator, I desire to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. I base my philosophy on three elements that are conducive to establishing such an environment, 1) the teacher acting as a guide, 2) allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and 3) promoting respect for all things and all people.

My goals as an educator are to give my students the academic and social skills needed to progress to the next grade. Also to provide a positive, engaging and nurturing classroom environment that is conducive to learning and to help them discover new interests.

For me, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them. I feel there is a need for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited about working with children. In our competitive society it is important for students to not only receive a solid education, but to work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to their individual needs. I am such a person and will always strive to be the best educator that I can be.
